Prisoners : A gritty intense thriller by Villeneuve.
Prisoners was the second movie that I watched of Villeneuve after "Incendies". I remembered enjoying it but have almost forgotten the plot as it was a long time ago. Last week, I with a couple of friends of mine plan to watch this thriller again. Prisoners is an intense movie which keeps you at the edge of your seats till the end.
To start with story telling, it captures your attention right from the beginning. It has a monotonous dark tone in the beginning although the scenes are more of a happy tone which makes you anxious to the main crux of the movie. The cinematic style of wide angle shots which is a classic trick of Villeneuve is already visible in this movie. Villeneuve does a fantastic job in adding symbolism at the appropriate points of the movie. In one shot, the character of Hugh Jackman (spoiler warning !!) comes in the driveway after interrogating "Alex" and the shadow of the red headlights create an image of blood trail behind symbolizing the crime that he is committing. The title of the movie can be interpreted in several ways starting from the girls being kidnapped to Mr. Dover (Hugh Jackman) being trapped like a prison in the pit for his crimes. The background music as of the tone is quite intense with a slight of hope in midst of conversations.
Hugh Jackman did a fantastic job as the role of a grieving dad who acts out of his mind because of his daughter's disappearance. Jake Gyllenhaal as usual shine in these roles. I especially love the interrogations of these two characters (especially the one in the Car). The side roles by Viola Davis, David Dastmalchian are equally commendable.
To sum it up, Prisoners is an amazing thriller. If you are looking for a nice thriller to watch in an evening, you can look it up. It is pretty intense and realistic when it comes to violence. To end this review, the first discussion that we had after watching the movie was " putting GPS tracking in Children might have solved this issue quite quickly :p".
