The Father : Zeller's directorial debut is a heartbreaking adventure.
There are films which make you speechless for quite sometime and it takes some time for it to digest in your mind. The Father is one of such movies that struck in my mind deeply. The very realistic description of an old person suffering Alzheimer and it effects in the family is touching and heartbreaking at many instances. On the top of this cake of emotions, the acting of Anthony Hopkins just took it to another level.
Having experienced old people suffering Alzheimer and its consequences, this movie shows the intense pain, suffering, lack of trust from the point of view of the patient. Zeller's theatrical setup inspired from his play suited well with the story. Ludovico Einaudi's score emphases all the emotions at the correct times. The storytelling is quite unique and it keeps you edge on the seats other than making you feel heartbroken. I especially loved the decoration of the apartments which seemed maze as seen from the perspective of the patient.
It is hard to describe the realistic acting of Hopkins at the age of 83. Starting from facial expressions, hand movements, emotions to random change of attitude just makes the character so relatable. The jokes followed with sudden breakdown makes you laugh and cry at the same time. The last 20 minutes soliloquy is just remarkable and makes the quotation " Old age is the second childhood" ( Seven stages of life by Shakespeare) all the more relatable. The supporting case including Olivia Coleman, Mark Gatiss did an adequate job.
If you are up for a movie which is going to make you feel emotional , The Father is for you. This film is a wonderful emotional ride with pure class acting and direction. Hopkins's Oscar win is well deserved. I am eagerly looking forward to more works by Zeller.
P.S.: In the movie , Hopkins's character is named Anthony and the date of birth mentioned is indeed Hopkins's actual date of birth. This is of no surprise considering Zeller wrote this play keeping Hopkins in his mind.
