Dune : Villeneuve's take on the sci-fi novel is a cinematic treat.

My first introduction to Villeneuve was Incendies which made me an instant fanboy of his work. A gripping dramatic storyline with intense violence. Since then most of his movies have been a treat to watch which includes The Enemy, Prisoners, Sicario, The Arrival and Blade Runner 2049. His treatment of the screen canvas and huge landscape oriented shots mixed with perfect CGI is a delight to watch in the big screen. The Dune delivers all of such effects along with the intense sci-fi political oriented story.

I must say I have not read the book. My sole idea was based on David Lynch's 1984 Dune which was an adaptation of the novel.  I consider it one of the works where Lynch was in a bit of haste.  I liked it but it symbolized that there are a lot of details he has skipped which makes the story less comprehensible. As of the huge size of the novel, Villeneuve splits this into two movies.  This is the Part I of the book(60% story of Lynch's move).  Villeneuve took his time in making the scenes more clearer with more gravity to the characters. His visualization of Arrakis, Caladan , Giedi Prime, the vehicles and many felt so lively and beautiful. Zimmer comes with his amazing score for each of the houses and the planet. The score itself is a worth to be listened in a loop.

The casting choice of Dune is one of the main highlights since its trailer released. Chalamet reprising the role of Paul was a nice choice although I find MacLachlan's portrayal in 1984 more intriguing (maybe I am biased here as I love him from Twin Peaks). Oscar Issac as the Duke did a great job. Dave Bautista surprisingly  suited for the role of Beast. Baron's character was made less disgusting as it is in the books.  The voices of Bennet Gesserit's and Paul's reminded me instantly of the electronic voice used by Lynch is a number of his projects.  The visualization (especially the Sand Worms) and the storytelling  gave the grandeur feeling to the movie.

With the second movie and HBOMax series planned in this saga, I am eagerly looking forward to Villeneuve's take. Hope this movie does well in box office so that Warner Bros and Legendary give a green light to the second part.
